چکیده

We have searched over 9 years of data from the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) Gamma Ray Spectrometer for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with abnormally hard spectra which may have been missed in previous searches in the 0.35{0.8 MeV energy band. For this purpose, we searched the higher 0.8{10 MeV band. We have found only two new GRBs in this search, compared with 177 GRBs found in the 0.35{0.8 MeV band. We have made a careful examination of the threshold conditions for identifying the 0.8{10 MeV events, which connrms that there is no undiscovered population of hard-spectrum GRBs which have escaped detection by SMM , BATSE and other instruments triggered by low-energy-ray emission. This conclusion does not apply to GRBs with duration < 2 s, nor to those which are much fainter than the general population. Our results constrain models of GRBs which require or allow the peak in energy emission to be above 1 MeV.

Red-shift Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts and Their Progenitors

Gamma ray bursts have been divided into two classes, long-soft gamma ray burst and short-hard gamma ray burst according to the bimodal distribution in duration time. Due to the harder spectrum and the lack of afterglows of short-hard bursts in optical and radio observations, different progenitors for short-hard bursts and long-soft bursts have been suggested. Based on the X-ray afterglow observ...

INTEGRAL discovery of persistent hard X - ray emission from the Soft Gamma Ray Repeater SGR 1806 – 20 ⋆

We report the discovery of persistent hard X-ray emission extending up to 150 keV from the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1806–20 using data obtained with the INTEGRAL satellite in 2003-2004. Previous observations of hard X-rays from objects of this class were limited to short duration bursts and rare transient episodes of strongly enhanced luminosity (“flares”). The emission observed with the IBI...

Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Look behind the Headlines1

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)—intense but brief flashes of gamma rays—were first discovered accidentally by US military satellites in 1967, and have since become a major puzzle for astrophysics. By 1992, however, observations mainly with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on-board NASA’s Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, had provided compelling evidence that GRBs originate mostly at large...

Pair Cascades and Precursors in Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gamma-ray burst sources with a high luminosity can produce electron-positron pair cascades in their environment as a result of back-scattering of a seed fraction of their original hard spectrum. The resulting spectral modifications offer the possibility of diagnosing not only the compactness parameter of the γ-ray emitting region but also the baryonic density of the environment external to the ...

Physical Model of Gamma-ray Burst Spectral Evolution

We propose a physical model of gamma-ray burst spectral evolution in which impulsively accelerated nonthermal leptons cool by saturated Compton upscattering of soft photons. This model naturally explains the recently discovered exponential decay of the spectral break energy with photon fluence, the hard-to-soft spectral evolution patterns, and other spectral and temporal properties of gamma-ray...
